Tim Harris MP - the International Liaison for South Africa's Democratic Alliance (DA) - visited Stockholm Sweden as a guest of the Swedish International Liberal Centre this week. As part of the visit he addressed a seminar on South Africa at the Swedish Parliament on the importance of Sweden's support for continued democracy and individual freedoms in South Africa. Although many Swedes were concerned by recent negative stories about the ruling African National Congress (ANC) he reassured them that the DA's recent electoral performance showed that, in fact, multi-party democracy remains strong in South Africa. He focussed on how fast the DA is growing at local level and increasingly threatening the ANC's historical dominance at national level. He underlined that Sweden's past support for South Africa should continue, but should - instead of being focussed on the ANC alone - should rather consist of interventions to protect democratic institutions and promote democratic competition. Tim was very impressed with the depth and breadth of knowledge about South African politics in Sweden and appreciated the generosity shown by his hosts and members of the Folkpartiet.
